In a round table discussion at Swiss Radio Day 2024, singer/songwriter Naveni and Christin Glanzmann of SRF Virus shared their impressions of how artists work with the radio. The discussion was moderated by Maria Victoria Haas.
In the discussion, it stood out that not only the actual broadcast on the radio, radio showcases and concert announcements are playing a central role in the careers of Swiss musicians; it is rather formats such as interviews or background reports in which the personality of the artists is highlighted. The exchange made clear how valuable the cooperation between the two worlds is and how it helps to strengthen the Swiss music landscape in the long run.
In the video you can watch the excerpt from the recording of this year’s Swiss Radio Day with the panel discussion organised by SUISA and Sonart (spoken in German, without subtitles).
“One play of a song on the radio has more power than a million streams”
Naveni still vividly remembers the moment when she heard one of her songs on the radio for the first time. This moment was more emotional for her than the milestone of one million streams. She is convinced that one play of a song on the radio has a more lasting effect on her career than one stream, as radio listeners tend to engage more intensively with the artist than is the case with a video that pops up on social media. In her eyes, a song being played on the radio gives the musician more credibility.
Close cooperation brings advantages
A significant added value provided by radio is the opportunity to create a showcase for the artists’ personalities. Music fans don’t just want to hear the songs, they also want to find out more about the people behind the music – what moves, inspires and drives them. Both Naveni and Christin Glanzmann are convinced that this close exchange does not only benefit the music creators but also the radio stations. Authentic insights into the lives of musicians is an exciting form of storytelling for listeners and enables a deeper connection between music and audience.
Swiss Radio Day: Exciting platform for musicians too
At Swiss Radio Day 2024, almost 20 specialist presentations and discussions were held on content and technical innovations in the radio industry and the future of the medium was discussed. Various networking opportunities rounded off the event. A total of 367 radio producers and radio enthusiasts took part on site, while 299 others were connected online.
For singer/songwriter Naveni, who took part in Swiss Radio Day for the first time, the event proved to be “totally valuable, also for musicians”. She emphasised how much you can learn on this occasion and how uncomplicated it is to get into conversation with radio producers there.
